MULCHING - MATANDAZO
Introduction
Mulch is dry, vegetative material used to cover the soil. It helps reduce evaporation and retain moisture, reduce soil erosion, suppress weed growth and provide plant nutrients as the material decomposes.
Mulch can be used in fields before and after planting, as well as around young crop plants. It is especially useful for high-valuable vegetable crops, and for for growing crops in dry areas, during dry-season cropping, and in places where the soil is easily eroded by heavy rains. Where soil erosion is a problem, slowly decomposing mulch material (low nitrogen content, high omC/N) will provide a long-term protection compared to quickly decomposing material.
Traditional banana mulching in Uganda. Note: Mulch should be applied at least 60-90 cm away from the banana stowl in order to encourage banana to have more vertical roots: when mulch is applied close to banana stowl, it encourages development of more superficial lateral roots, which do not held the plant firmly against wind and exposes the plants to water shortage during short dry spell.
Advantages and disadvantages of mulching
What are the advantages of mulching?
Mulch keeps the soil underneath moist longer than bare soil.
Controls soil erosion by cushioning the impact of raindrops and by slowing runoff.
Suppresses weeds by shading them out.
Leads to healthy crop growth.
What are the disadvantages:
Mulching is labour-intensive.
It can introduce new pests and diseases into a field.
Dead plants for use as mulch may not be available.
How to do it:
1. Carry to the field the material you want to spread as mulch.
2. Spread it on the soil using your hands or a rake. Put a layer of mulch 7-15 cm (3-6 inches) deep all over the bed, or around the growing plants. Do not put on so much mulch that you bury the plants or shade them out.
Do's and Dont's:
Use dry plant material that does not rot quickly.
Don't use wet or green material as mulch.
Constraints of Mulching
Some organisms can proliferate too much in the moist and protected conditions of the mulch layer. Slugs and snails can multiply very quickly under a mulch layer. Ants or termites which may cause damage to the crops also may find ideal conditions for living. When crop residues are used for mulching, in some cases there is an increased risk of sustaining pests and diseases.
Damaging organisms such as stem borers may survive in the stalks of crops like cotton, corn or sugar cane. Plant material infected with viral or fungal diseases should not be used if there is a risk that the disease might spread to the next crop. Crop rotation is very important to overcome these.
When carbon rich materials such as straw or stalks are used for mulching, nitrogen from the soil may be used by microorganisms for decomposing the material. Thus, nitrogen may be temporary not available for plant growth (risk of N-immobilisation).
Risk of Nitrogen-immobilisation:
When organic material is applied to the soil, the decomposing microbes multiply quickly. For growth, they need nutrients, especially nitrogen, like plants do. If the applied plant material does not contain sufficient nitrogen, the micro organisms will take it from the soil. This process is called nitrogen immobilisation, as the nitrogen is fixed temporarily in the microbes and released only after some time. During this time, the microbes compete with the plants for nitrogen and the crop may suffer from malnutrition.
How to prevent N-immobilisation?
Old or rough plant materials should be applied to the soil at least two months before planting or sowing the main crop
nitrogen immobilisation can occur when the following materials are applied: straw or grain husks, material containing wood (e.g. twigs, saw dust), half rotten compost.

KILIMO CHA ZAO LA SOYA
Utangulizi:
Soya
3. Kwa kuwa soya ina kiasi kikubwa cha protini kupunguza kasi ya mashambulizi ya vijidudu vya maradhi mbalimbali ikiwa ni pamoja na magonjwa ya kansa, moyo, na kuwaongezea nguvu wagonjwa hasa wa UKIMWI;
yanasaidia viungo kukua kwa haraka;
6. Soya hurutubisha udongo.

IMPORTANCE OF TILLAGE
HELLO,
Due to the fact that most of the farmers practice farming by
just imitating from others, today I have decided to give you the importance of
tilling the land before planting/sowing our crops. Knowing this will help in
soil conservation as well as crop improvement.
Tilth and Tillage - Effects of Tillage on soil & Plant growth
Effects of Tillage on
soil & Plant growth:
A)
Effect on soil:
1) loosens the soil which favors the germination & growth of crop,
2) Improves the soil structure due to alternate drying and cooling,
3) Improves soil permeability, soil aeration & soil inversion,
4) Facilitates the movement of water in soil,
5) Results in soil & water conservation through higher infiltration, reduce run-off & increase depth of soil for moisture storage,
6) Holds more water in the soil,
7) Increased soil aeration helps in multiplication of micro-organisms,
8) Org. matter decomposition is hastened resulting in higher nutrient “availability,
9) Increase aeration helps in degradation of herbicide and pesticide residues & harmful allelopathic chemicals exuded by roots of previous crops or weeds.

9) Increase aeration helps in degradation of herbicide and pesticide residues & harmful allelopathic chemicals exuded by roots of previous crops or weeds.
Tillage operations also
influence the physical properties of soil like:
1) Pore space: Tillage increase the pore
spaces i.e. space between the soil particles, due to equal amount of capillary
& non- capillary (Macro & microspores) pores. This facilities free
movement of air & moisture in the soil & increases infiltration.
2) Soil structure: Soil with crumble & granular clods are considered as soil with good structure which can be achieved by proper tillage operations at optimum moisture. This reduces the soil loss due to erosion.
2) Soil structure: Soil with crumble & granular clods are considered as soil with good structure which can be achieved by proper tillage operations at optimum moisture. This reduces the soil loss due to erosion.
3) Bulk density: when
soil is loosened, the soil volume increases without any effect on weight.
Therefore, bulk density of tilled soil is less than untilled soil which is
favorable in many ways for crop, micro organisms, etc.
4) Soil colour: Tillage increases
oxidation and decomposition resulting in fading of colour The org. matter is
mainly responsible for the dark brown to dark grey colour of soil.
5) Soil water: Tillage improves
soil water in different ways which depends on soil porosity, soil depth &
roughness. also increases rate of infiltration, water holding capacity (WHC)
& hydraulic conductively.
6) Soil temperature: Tillage creates up
to soil temperature for seed germination & seed establishment. Tillage
loosens the soil surface resulting in decrease of thermal conductivity (rate of
heat transfer at which the heat penetrates) and heat capacity (heat storage /
unit area)
B) Effects on crop
growth:
1) Tillage loosen the soil thereby favors the
germination & establishment of seeding.
2) Tillage helps in maintaining the optimum plant stand,
3) Increases depth of root penetration,
2) Tillage helps in maintaining the optimum plant stand,
3) Increases depth of root penetration,
4) Roots proliferate profusely in loose soil & increase the growth of seminal & lateral roots.
5) Reduce the competition within crop & weeds for light, water, nutrients & space thereby helps in better growth of crop,
6) Tillage reduce the pest attack on succeeding crop,
7) Tillage helps in availability of nutrients to crop in proper amount.
